A visit to the Parisian Catacombes in 2008

The Catacombs of Paris, actually an ossuary (meaning bones depository) was built using an abandoned underground limestone quarry of Paris in the 18th century following diseases originating from the centuries-old Les Halles District cemetery. The remains of the dead are arranged in a serpentine and obscure labyrinth in sequence of the cemeteries that the bones were procurred from.

It was my first itinerary in Paris back in June 2008 because I wanted to check out the curious lines of tourists near Raspail...(read the story from an old post here). Many cited that the place is haunted. Guess you'll have to see and experience it yourself to find out...

The unmistakable green metal gates at the entrance to the Catacombes.

A signage explaining the origins of the Catacombes.

Another signage that corresponds to the cemetery of Avenue de Montsouris

A replica of the nether land...

An engraved plaque on the wall commemorating the works of the ossuary.

Actual entrance to the Catacombs with the caption "Stop! Herein lies the Empire of Death". Pretty impressive.

Some obscured path...

First glimpse of Death...

Bones and skulls arranged neatly in the obscurity of the underground labyrinth.

A close-up of an old skull...

Skulls arranged in a heart shaped formation.

A photo during a rest...
