Here's a pictorial of my recent visit to Melaka: Heeren and Jonker Streets. One thing that will definitely improve the quality of this heritage site: ban cars, lorries and buses from this site as they are the main source of pollution and danger - noise, traffic jams (and danger to pedestrians/tourists as I noticed certain drivers sped through these narrow roads disregarding the presence of pedestrians during the day), narrowing of the streets by parking indiscriminately despite summons given and finally pollution to the overall presentation of the site as the parked cars in front of the rows and rows of old shophouses are really an eye sore...
Part 1: nightscape
A seal maker in Jonker at night...
A lone street musician.
Lighted trishaws in front of the Tourism Office.
The Stadhuys and Clock Tower at night.
A riverside restaurant...
Heeren Street at night - hated the choice of lighting. The red gives the street an aura like a red light district in ancient China.
The Baba Nyonya House
Part 2: dayscape
Would have been a lot better in daytime without the cars, buses and lorries (and motorcycles!)...
The original occupant (rare) of a Nyonya house cleaning the windows of the house at Heeren Street
A Nyonya Kitchen...
A large mansion in Heeren painted all white like the house of a colonial kapitan...
Facade of a Kongsi, meaning a clan house. All the Chinese immigrants of the past erected clan houses as a mean to gather their strength and to take care of their interests...
Found this Nyonya dress shop in Heeren Street - bought a pair of beaded heels for my wife...
The Christ Church and Stadhuys are actually not in Jonker nor Heeren but they're just on a parallel street divided by the river...
Couldn't resist a photo op...
Melaka River by day...
Wildlife is still possible despite all - a water monitor lizard on a narrow bank of cement.
