Hakka Restaurant in Raub

If anything about Raub is that it has 9 satellite Chinese New Villages, formed during the Emergency years to control Communisme in Malaya by the British army. These days, they are still vibrant, being principally agri-based small holders specialising in rubber, cash crops and oil palm, and of these, the closest 3 villages to Raub: Sempalit, Sungai Lui and Bukit Koman are principally Hakka villages...and the cuisine, eventhough in general we can say that fast foods are fast eroding the eating habits in Raub, authentic Chinese dishes are still to be found in the last bastions - the Chinese New Villages. We have been observing this newly opened Hakka restaurant in Sungai Lui for awhile now eventhough we never actually made any effort to try (basically any Chinese dish in Raub would have either Hakka or Cantonese influence) but curiosity got the better of us and well,,,

Nobody can dispute what restaurant this is...We asked for some typically Hakka dishes (pretended to be dumb and stupid) and here are some recommendations...

Jasmin flower and egg soup (had tons of these when we were young)

A classic: braised fried pork with fermented tofu (Nam Yu) and wood ear fungus

A simple stir fry of vege...

Another classic (more of Cantonese): steamed chicken with wolf berries, ginger, shiitake mushroom and dried tiger lily buds

Verdict: could be worth a second try for the more classic Rice wine chicken and steamed pork with salted fish...
